The United States Bureau of Reclamation, 1990

This monograph is not intended to he a comprehensive treatise on cavitation in hydraulic structures. Instead, only highlights of cavitation theory are presented to give the reader a sense for the basic mechanisms that must he understood before engineering problems and solutions can be discussed. Many of the basic cavitation concepts are treated in much more detail by Knapp, Daily, and Hammitt in their classic book Cavitation which is is available through the Institute of Hydraulic Research, University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa.

The purpose of this monograph is to give the designer of hydraulic structures both an understanding of cavitation and the design tools necessary to eliminate or reduce the damaging effects of cavitation in hydraulic chute and spillway structures.
