Learn more about how critical remote monitoring systems can be from the failure of Taum Sauk Dam (DamFailures.org)

It is increasingly common for water systems including dams and reservoirs to include digital instruments and/or controls. These types of systems can be used to remotely monitor the condition of the dam or water level in the reservoir, operate gates and valves, and regulate water flow and treatment. Since these controls are typically remote in nature, it is important to consider system reliability and redundancy, especially when the systems are critical to the safe operation of a dam.
