Exposed steel due to spalling and cracking allows water to corrode the steel, which quickly weakens the pipe. If you have exposed steel, repair it quickly by cleaning and grouting the impacted location.

The Steel cylinder of this prestressed concrete cylinder conduit was visible in a recent inspection of this central Montana dam. Engineers determined this was a threat to the structural integrity of the conduit. The conduit was repaired by adding internal banding.
