All references, direct quotes, information sources, and photographs that are used on the Dam Safety Toolbox should be cited. References should include the title, author, and year of publication. When citing within the text of a page, the following code templates can be used to automatically populate the citations for a topic page. When appropriate, references should be added to the Best Practices Resources Catalog or Other Resources Catalog using these guidelines and cited as "internal references". If a reference is a webpage or some other document that is not publicly available, an "external reference" can be used within the citation.
Once a citation has been used on a topic page, subsequent sentences and paragraphs on the same page can be referenced using a ShortID. This only works within a single topic page. ShortIDs do not carry over to other pages of the website.
