Since at least the time of the ancient Egyptians, siphons have been a useful tool to transport fluids in conduits by arranging the conduit in an inverted “U” and relying on gravity to eliminate the need for a pump. In the United States, siphons have been used as spillways and outlet works at dams. This webinar reviews the best applications for siphons at dams; design procedures and considerations; misconceptions regarding how they function; real-life examples in use; and the best methods to construct and operate a siphon.
