When deciding to replace or upgrade your outlet works, a number of considerations should be taken into account. A few questions to ask yourself:
- Do I need to make regular releases? If so, a gate that is easy to access and operate is needed. If not, and your dam is not very high, a siphon may meet your needs.
- Is my dam remote and difficult to access? If so, a low-maintenance system may be best.
- Is ice damage a concern? If so, caution with use of inclined slide gates and in reservoir gate towers is advised.
- Is there a significant amount of debris in my reservoir? Special attention to design and location of the intake structure is warranted.
