Association of State Dam Safety Officials, 2023

This webinar will provide the latest details in design trends, mix designs, control sections, and construction means and methods for roller-compacted concrete (RCC) spillways and overtopping protection. With projects now over 40 years in service, it is clear which design criteria should be used to construct RCC hydraulic structures with long-term durability in extreme weather environments. This course will present what has been learned, along with today’s design trends, and will also look at other applications of RCC for hydraulic structures including support of CVC spillways and channel protection.

Key Takeaways:

1. Learn about updates to PCA’s Design Manual for RCC Spillways and Overtopping Protection (all webinar participants will receive a free electronic copy).

2. Review data analysis for projects completed in the U.S. over the last 40 years and trends observed.

3. Discuss key elements of RCC mix design required to “get it right” – issues that occur and how they transfer into problems during construction.

4. Discuss the latest trends in RCC construction including the emergence of immersion-vibrated roller-compacted concrete (IVRCC) in the U.S., the use of materials with a lower carbon footprint such as Portland-limestone blended cement (PLC), improvements in freeze/thaw resistance in RCC, and a review of long-term performance.

5. Review the latest data available to assist with estimating RCC construction costs.
