The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is an agency of the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The agency's primary purpose is to coordinate the response to a disaster that has occurred in the United States and that overwhelms the resources of local and state authorities. The National Dam Safety Program operates within FEMA and is a partnership of states, federal agencies and other stakeholders to encourage and promote the establishment and maintenance of effective federal and state dam safety programs to reduce the risk to human life, property, and the environment from dam related hazards.
