Source characterization describes the rate at which earthquakes of a given magnitude and dimensions occur at a given location. There are two main types of seismic sources, faults and areal sources. The following sections briefly discuss the approach used to model the geometry of each. It is important to note that a Deterministic Seismic Hazard Analysis (DSHA) only requires some of the inputs discussed in the following sections; a Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis (PSHA) however requires all of the inputs.
