In the probabilistic approach, all possible and relevant deterministic earthquake scenarios (all possible magnitude and location combinations) are considered as well as all possible ground motion probability levels (a range of the number of standard deviations above or below the median). For each earthquake scenario, the distance to the site is computed and then the ground motions are computed for each number of standard deviations above or below the median using a ground motion attenuation relation. A probabilistic analysis is just a large number of deterministic analyses.
