Engineered filters were not commonly implemented in dam designs until the 1980's. Dams constructed before this era probably do not meet modern filter design criteria to protect against internal erosion. Modern practice and guidelines dictate the use of zoned embankments that include engineered filters downstream of earth cores and around penetrations and toe drains.
