Radial gates and other types of gate systems can be subjected to a range of loading conditions and can experience corrosion or other weakening over time. Strain gages are commonly used to monitor gate performance. “Two types of gages are generally used for measuring strains: surface gages and internal or embedded gages. These types can be further divided into short- and long-term gages, depending on the duration of measurements. Usually, short-term strains are best measured by electrical type gages, while some long-term strains (e.g., creep and shrinkage) can be conveniently measured using detachable mechanical gages”.[1]

Electrical hoist current draw is another means of monitoring gate performance.
